2.16. 시간 선택과 루프

 

리퍼에서 시간 선택이란 프로젝트에서 시간 방향으로 특정 연주 영역을 선택하는 것을 말한다. 한동안 프로젝트의 특정 부분에서만 작업해야 할 때가 있다. 이런 작업을 하기 전에는 Options 메뉴의 Loop points linked to time selection 옵션이 켜 있는지 확인해야 한다. 이 옵션이 켜져 있다면 시간 선택을 한다는 것이 곳 루프를 만드는 것과 같다. 옵션이 꺼져 있다면 시간 선택과 루프 만들기는 별개의 작업이 된다. 어떤 상태이건, 루프를 만들려면 다음 작업을 실행한다.

 

1. 루프가 시작될 곳 근처에서 재생을 멈추거나, 빈 영역에 마우스를 클릭해 편집 커서 위치를 옮겨준다.
2. 화면 위쪽 시간선에 마우스 커서를 두고, 왼쪽 단추를 시간 방향으로 잡아 끌어준 후, 루프가 끝날 위치에서 놓아준다. 루프의 시작점과 끝점에 작은 삼각형 두 개가 표시된다.

 

이 작업을 할 때, 정확한 단위로 선택이 되질 않는 것이 문제라면, 리퍼에는 스냅 옵션이라는 것 있다. Alt + S 단축키를 눌러 스냅 시키기 상태를 켜고 끌 수 있다. 스냅에 대해서는 7장에서 더 자세하게 다룬다.

 

팁: 특정 미디어 항목의 길이에 딱 맞춰서 루프를 선택을 하려면 Ctrl 키를 누른채 그 항목을 더블클릭한다. 반면에 시간 선택을 미디어에 맞추려면 Shift 키를 누른채 그 항목을 더블클릭한다.

 

루프를 선택한 상태에서, 트랜스포트 바의 루프 단추가 활성화되어 있다면, 프로젝트를 재생하면 선택된 루프 영역이 계속 반복되어 재생된다. 키보드 R 키를 누르면 루프 기능을 켜고 끌 수 있다. 루프 기능을 꺼진 상태에서는 루프 마지막에 도달하면 멈추도록 할 수 있는데, Options > Preferences > Audio > Playback 페이지 아래에 이 옵션이 있다.

 

 

루프 영역을 바꾸려면 위 과정을 다시 반복한다. 바꾸는 것이 아니라 그냥 루프 영역을 지우려면 Esc 키를 누른다.

 

Loop points are not linked to time selection 옵션이 꺼져 있는 상태에서, 루프가 아닌 시간 선택을 하려면, 미디어 항목의 위나 아래, 또는 편곡 영역의 비어 있는 곳에서 마우스를 잡아 끌면 된다. 마우스를 잡아 끄는 동안, 툴팁으로 현재 선택의 시작 지점, 끝 지점, 그리고 선택된 길이가 표시된다.

 

 

시간선 위에서 마우스 우클릭을 하면 시간 선택 영역으로 확대 이동하기 같은 시간 선택과 관련된 메뉴들을 볼 수 있다. 메뉴를 이용해 시간선에 표시되는 시간 단위를 바꿔줄 수도 있다.

 

2.17. 시간과 루프 선택 관리하기

 

시간 선택이나 루프 만들기를 해보면 원했던 것보다 너무 크거나 작게 선택될 때가 많다는 것을 느끼게 될 것이다. 마우스를 이용해 루프 선택을 조정하려면 조정하려는 쪽의 경계 부분을 마우스로 클릭한 후 원하는 방향으로 잡아 끌어준다. Ctrl 키를 누른채 이렇게 하면 스냅 설정을 무시하고 미세한 조정이 가능해진다.

 

트랜스포트 바의 Selection 영역에서 시작 지점, 끝 지점, 길이 표시 부분을 마우스로 클릭한 후 휠 버튼을 이용해 루프 선택을 조정할 수도 있고, 직접 시작 지점, 끝 지점, 길이 등을 입력해줄 수도 있다.

 

 

루프 영역을 좌우로 이동시키려면 Shift 키를 누른채 시간 선의 선택 영역을 마우스로 잡아 끌어주면 된다. 시간 선택과 관련된 단축키들은 다음과 같다.

 

• 왼쪽으로 조금씩 옮기기: , (쉼표 키)
• 오른쪽으로 조금씩 옮기기: . (마침표 키)
• 현재 선택된 길이만큼 왼쪽으로 옮기기: Shift + ,
• 현재 선택된 길이만큼 오른쪽으로 옮기기: Shift + .
• 왼쪽 경계로 조금씩 늘리기: Ctrl + ,
• 왼쪽 경계로 조금씩 줄이기: Ctrl + .
• 오른쪽 경계로 늘리기: Ctrl + Alt + .

마우스가 아닌 키보드로 시간 선택을 만들고 싶을 수도 있다. 그럴 경우 먼저 만들려는 루프의 시작점이나 끝 지점에 커서를 위치시키고, 다음 방법을 이용한다.

2.16. Time Selections and Time Loops

 

In REAPER, time selection means to select a temporal region of a project. You might need to work on just a part of your project for a while. To do this, first check the Options menu to see if Loop points linked to time selection is enabled. If it is, then making a time selection and defining a loop are the same thing. If not, then making a time selection and defining a loop become two different things. Either way, to define a loop area do as follows.

 

1. Stop the playback at or near the point where you want your loop to begin or click your mouse in the background area to move the Edit Cursor there.
2. Place your mouse over the Timeline, then click/drag along it, releasing the mouse to define the area to be looped. The start and end of the loop are marked by two small triangles.

 

If when you attempt this the selection snaps outwards to define a larger area than you want, then REAPER has snapping enabled. The shortcut keys Alt + S toggle snapping on and off. Snapping will be discussed in detail in Chapter 7.

 

Tip: To set the loop selection to match a media item, hold Ctrl while you double click on that item. On the other hand, to set the time selection to match a media item, hold Shift while you double-click on the item.

 

Now when you play the project, provided that the loop button on the transport bar is engaged, it will replay over again the area selected for your Loop. Pressing the R key toggles this loop function on and off. There is also the option to stop playback at the end of a loop when the repeat function is disabled, under Options > Preferences > Audio > Playback page.

 

To change the area defined as your loop, repeat the original procedure. To clear the loop altogether, without defining a new one, press the Esc key.

 

If loop points are not linked to time selection, you can define a time selection not a loop, by clicking and dragging in the space underneath or between the media items, in the arrange view background area. Note that while you are dragging a time selection, a tooltip pops up which shows the start position, end position and length of your selection.

 

Right clicking on the Timeline then gives you a menu of commands which you can apply to a time selection, including Zoom Selection. You can also use this menu to change the units used on the timeline.

 

 

 

2.17. Managing Time and Loop Selections

 

You’ll probably find at first that it’s too easy to perhaps select too large an area, or to miss part of the area that you intended to select. To modify a loop selection using the mouse, hover the mouse over the edge at the start or finish of the loop selection on the timeline, then click and drag left or right. Holding Ctrl while you do this cause any snap settings to be ignored.

 

You can also modify a time selection by first clicking then scrolling the mousewheel over the Selection area of the Transport Bar. If you wish, you can enter actual times in the start and end time boxes.

 

To move a loop selection, hold down Shift while clicking and dragging the selected area on the time line by the mouse. There are also several keyboard shortcuts you can use for managing Time Selections.

 

• Nudge Entire Time Selection left a little: , (comma)
• Nudge Entire Time Selection right a little: . (period or full stop)
• Move Time Selection left by time selection length: Shift + ,
• Move Time Selection right by time selection length: Shift + .
• Extend Time Selection to left by nudging left edge left a little: Ctrl + ,

If you wish, you can use the keyboard rather than the mouse to manage your time selections. First you need to position the cursor at either the start or the end of the loop, then use one of these:

 

• Drag cursor to the left and create time selection: Shift + Left Arrow
• Drag cursor to the right and create time selection: Shift + Right Arrow
